My husband's 2nd great grandfather was Joseph Stockton Goheen who was born May 24, 1854 in Green County, IL. His parents were Charles Besneth and Mary (Certin) Goheen. Charles and Mary were married in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was Charles 2nd wife. Charles was born in Bucks County, PA in 1822, he learned the trade of cooper, followed it in Bucks count, where he married his first wife, and in young manhood moved to Cincinnati, working a his trade in that city, and finally to White Hall, Green County, Il where he spent the rest of his life and where he died in 1872. I have found his Charles in the 1860 census in Marion County, IL, so I am not for sure Charles B enlisted in 1861 in an Illinois regiment and was active duty practically from the beginning to the end of that was. Politically he was a Democrat, was a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic fraternity and Sons of Temperance. By his first marriage he had one daughter Lydia. In White Hall, IL. Her second husband was George Coryell. He died in Lambertville, NJ. Charles B Goheen married for his second wife, Mary Certin. They were married in Cincinnati. She was born in Warren County, Ohio on October, 1839. In 1918 she was living in St. Louis, Missouri. Her two oldest children were Sara Caroline and Joseph Stockton (my husband's 2 nd great grandfather). Charles B.'s parents were Stephen Goheen who was born in Bucks County, PA of Irish and French stock. He spent his live in Bucks County, where as a potter he was engaged in the manufacture of high grade porclein ware. He died before 1872. He also held the rank of major in the United States army. His wife's name was Besneth.Endnotes
