Thelma Sims graduated as valedictorian from Mena High School, Polk County, Arkansas in 1926. She began teaching shortly after her graduation. Some of the schools where she taught were, Board Camp, Shady, and upon moving to Wichita, Kansas, began teaching there in 1953, the year she arrived. She received a major portion of her college education through correspondence courses and by attending summer school and Saturday classes in Arkansas. When she arrived in Wichita, she immediately enrolled in summer school at Friends University. She later enrolled in Wichita (State) University and continued going to summer school and evening classes, and received her BA in Education in 1959.
