Notes
Military
Company H was recruited by Captain Thomas Espy principally around the communities of Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair. The St. Clair Guards were already formed as a local militia in 1860 perhaps in response to the visit to Pittsburgh by the Chicago Zouaves. Their Colors were purchased in 1860 at a cost of $46.25. Upon arrival in Harrisburg the Colors were returned to Capt. Espy's family when it was learned that company flags were not permitted..Most volunteers in Company H signed up for the new regiment on the Fourth of July, even if they were not officially mustered in until later. An immense body of Pittsburgh's Home Guard held a grand parade on the Fourth and heard great orators, none more stem-winding as Colonel Black, who officially began organizing his regiment that day.
Espy was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and a high percentage of the volunteers in this company, especially the officer corps, came from that church, including several from Espy's own family.
Mustered in 4 July 1861. Promoted to Sergeant 8 September 1861; to 1st Sergeant 8 July 1862; to 2nd Lieutenant 29 September 1862. Mustered out with company, 13 July 1864.
