At first, the organizers of the new County met at the home of John Stewart. This meeting was not one accompanied with high fashion and culinary delights. John Stewart was the oldest son of John (Lower Pot Hundred in Frederick County, Maryland) and his wife Arena Ross Stewart (Prince George County, Md.) The son, John, was born on September 25, 1792, in Prince George County. He ran away from home in his early teens and came to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was bound to William Tillery who operated a coach between Knoxville and Nashville. When the Hiwassee District was opened for settlement in 1820, William Tiller and John Stewart entered and in the district. Tillery's daughter, Lettie (born in 1800), became John Stewart's wife. It was this forty-three year old John and his thirty-five years old wife, along with a cluster of awes children, who hosted the first county court of Meigs County on the first Monday in May, 1826Residence
