SOUTH BEND - Roland W. Goheen, 98, of Ridgedale Road, South Bend, Ind., died following an illness at 5:15 p.m. on Sun-day, April 26, in Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Goheen was born on Oct. 15, 1899, in Wyatt, Ind., to Chauncy and Mary (Welches) Goheen, and had lived in the South Bend area his entire life.
On Oct. 12, 1974, in South Bend, he married Luella Zoss, who preceded him in death on May 4, 1984.
He is survived by a niece, Mary Alice Ruklic of Mishawaka, Ind.; a nephew, Hugh Bush of South Bend; and by several cousins.
Mr. Goheen retired in 1980 as chairman of the board of The National Bank, South Bend, after a period of 62 years of service, and where he commenced working at age 18.
He became the State of Indiana's first trust officer. He was a founder of the Community Foundation and founding member of the board of The St. Joseph County Scholarship Foundation; director of The Marquette Lumber Company of Cassopolis, Mich.; Blocksom Company of Michigan City, Ind.; and Great Lakes Distributing Company; the South Bend Toy Manufacturing Company, The Ridge Company, the First Interstate Development Company, the South Bend Neon Company and Studebaker National Museum, all of South Bend; and was a lifetime director of The South Bend Art Center.
He also served as manager, director and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce of South Bend; director and treasurer of Memorial Hospital of South Bend; developer and operator of The Milton Home for the elderly of South Bend, under the provisions of the Last Will and Testaments of Robert P. and Clara I. Milton; director and vice-president of the Century Center; member and director of The Committee of 100; director and treasurer of United Way; president and director of The Indiana Club; organizer, director and treasurer of Arup, Inc., a manufacturer of small single-engine airplanes; and he was a member of the Trust Committee of the Indiana Bankers Association.
He was also a member of the Elks Lodge No. 235; South Bend Lodge No. 294 F&AM, York Rite; Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend; Mizpah Shrine Temple of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and he served as treasurer and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, 333 W. Colfax Avenue, with Rev. David Morrow officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street.
