Notes
Birth
I am researching the Goheen roots. I have found my father's line but I am also trying to find a one Thomas P. Goheen who I believed lived in the Newtown area. He enlisted in the 3rd PA Reserves in June 1861. He was killed on 6/27/1862 at the battle of Gaines Mill, VA but I cannot find out ny more information on him.I believed his was the uncle of Thomas P. Goheen who died in 1909 in Hulmeville, PA. His daughter, Rae Goheen, was my grandmother. She married Alvin Schoenfeld in 1911.
Can you help me on any research on this side of the family? Any help would be greatly appreciated on this. My father is still doing well and he is 93 years old. My father and mother are living with us in Gloucester, VA.
Bill,
I wish I could help you. I did find that he enlisted on 10 June 1861. This information is in the Doylestown Democrat, 16 July 1861.
I do not have any evidence that he was a brother of Jeremiah, so you have more than me on that. I do have Rae Goheen and her husband in my database, and glad to know that they are still alive.
On the Library of Congress there is a photo of the battlefield at Gains Mill three days after the battle when it was returned, soldiers were still laying in the field. It was a terrible battle.
The will of Charles Bessonet Goheen (written in 1851) names three of his deceased children, Richard, James, and Joseph. Following the censuses back it is evident he had more children and it is quite possible that Thomas P was one of these older children not mentioned. Do you have any evidence that Thomas P was a child of Charles Goheen. I would appreciate any help you can provide. This line I have not investigated very much.
Betty Lou,
Thank you for answering my e-mail and I am hoping that I may be closer to solving this mystery. Rae and Alvin have passed away but my dad, Bruce, and his younger brother, Merle is still alive. In 1972 or 73 Rae Schoenfeld left her house that she had been in since 1911. When my mother was helping clean out the attic she found a vest pocket bible with the date of June 5th, 1861 and there was a passage from the bible and a small words about "fight the good fight." It was address to Thomas P. Goheen.
Rae's father was Thomas Goheen born 1860 and since he was not a Jr., I thought the logic would be that he was the uncle and not the father. Thomas P. Goheen (the uncle?) lived in the Newtown area of Bucks County which was about 15 miles from Hulmeville. If he was not related to Jeremiah then how would his bible come to the Schoenfeld house.
I do remember my mother asking Rae if she knew anything about the bible but she never knew anything about him.
As far as the battlefield there is not much to it as compared to Gettysburg. I did take several pictures of where the 3rd fought which I can send to you if you want them. I actually live about 65 miles from the site and I think he is buried in the Cold Harbor National Cemetery but not really sure.
Just out of curiosity why would Charles Goheen leave some of his Children out of his will? Also from what I see it seems as if Jeremiah died in the 1880's after moving from Hulmeville and his wife died sometime after the last child was born. Is this correct? If this is correct then who took care of Thomas (born 1860) and the rest of the family. Thomas's wife lived with Alvin and Rae and was the mid wife for the birth of my father in 1921.
