Miscellaneous
In the year of 1807 the Columbia school was erected; On May 11th 1838 the stockholders increased the number of shares to one hundred at fourteen dollars per share for the purpose of raising money to put another story upon the building and extending the school several feet in the rear. Davis Goheen was one of the new stockholders.Occupation
Reverend David GoheenDavis Goheen came from the East about the time the six month's suspension of the college had been voted by the board, because of debts which had become so onerous. Mr. Goheen, with a genius for organization, was a good financier and an enthusiastic worker for the institution, and in a little time he had the lagging hopes of the older patrons re-established. Early in the California gold excitements together with his brother, S. M. E. Goheen, M.D.— he set his face toward that new Eldorado, his chief purpose, as tradition has it, being to find the hidden treasure which would establish McKendree, but died of cholera at Independence, Mo., while outfitting for his journey.

Dr. Goheen came to Belleville from Lebanon, where his brother was for a time pastor of a Methodist congregation. He was a graduate, traveled and skilled physician, and ha served some years as a surgeon in the united States Navy. He brought home with him from that service many interesting objects gathered in many cruises. From time to time he gave illustrated scientific lectures on temperance, anatomy and physiology. During the memorable cholera epidemic of 1849, he remained at his pot of duty, while may brother physiciana deserted, and having experience abroad in handling tat frightful scourge, he treated many cases with marked success. Dr Goheen was a magnificent man, stately in bearing ad was devoted to his profession. His wife Miss Annie Harrison, a daughter of Belleville's "grand old man," Thomas Harrison. Their one child died in infancy. Dr Goheen went to California in 1850 and died there in 1853.Death
Cholera at Independence:The scourge of our country is making fearful havoc in Independence and vicinity. Up to Thursday of this week, it was carrying off large numbers of the Californians and citizens.
The Rev. D Goheen of Lebanon, Illinois, was one of its victims on Sunday, after an attack of ten or twelve hours.
... The emigrants were dying by tens in the encampments of the vicinity, and up to the time of my departure there was little or no abatement.
He died of Cholera and is buried in Independence, Missouri.
