Dear Cousin,
The paper reached our home at noon to day with the account of your
Fathers death in it. It seemed very sudden to us, even though we knew he
was sick. In your letter you said he was improving and as we could hear
nothing further had hoped he was getting well again.
Cousin NAN and JOHN BAILEY were down at the Graysville church last
Sunday and they stayed down with us until evening. We were wondering how
your Father was and then we told them what MRS BEAGLE had told us about
her nice visit at your home.
I carried the paper over to MISS NAN and SADE GLENN after we had read
it, and SADE said she would write to your Mother [Nancy McDonald d/o
Jane Bailey].
ANNA MARY has told you about ARTHUR CAMPBELL's sickness. We were down to
see him Sat. evening and found him very weak. ANNA was home over Sunday
and they were all very cheerful but I know they have no hope of his
recovery.
I returned from Phil. Sat. a week ago, just happened to be there
"Founders Week" and enjoyed the parades very much, also received great
encouragement from Dr Wilson, my Dr. there. He told me to take off my
brace one hour earlier every day until I can do without all the time.
Father and HAMILL are almost through with the fall work and Father was
just saying this evening that he did not like to think of the
approaching winter as the winters are always somewhat lonely in the
country. I know he was thinking of your Father's death and of how few
the persons are now of his own age.
I hope your Mother is better and able to be out of her room. Did your
Aunt Annie [prob. Nancy's sister, Anna McDonald Shafer] get to the
funeral?
GEORGE and MYRTLE had a narrow escape from being burnt up as the flue of
their cook stove had not been fixed right and a board near it had caught
fire one evening, it burned all night and they did not know of it until
the next morning when the[y] found the roof burning at a good rate. The
firemen soon came then and put it out, it left their house in pretty bad
shape as the town supply of water is now so muddy, but they were very
thankful that it was not any worse.
Your Mother would not know Spruce creek as the water is so low in it
now.
There has not been any rain in this part of the country for so long that
in some parts of it the people are becoming alarmed for fear they will
soon suffer on account of it. In Altoona there is just enough water in
the reservoir to last a little over a week and if there is not a rain
before next Wed the ministers have appointed that day for meetings to
pray for rain.
Now I must close. Father and the girls join with me in extending our
sympathy to you and the other members of your family.
Very sincerely yours,
Nora Goheen
