Charles Gilbert Thorne was known as "Grampa Charlie" within the family. He was a quiet man although he had a stubborn and fiery streak (which matched his red hair) when things did not occur as he knew they should. His eldest son, Anslie, left home early and that left his younger son, Richard (Dick), as the only other male at home. Dick and his dad did not always get along perhaps both being too much alike. Grampa Charlie's grandsons, Doug and Gordon Thorne, remember him well since they were around the farmhouse quite often. To them Grampa Charlie was a stern man who enjoyed having his girls around (seven daughters). They would often have friends into the parlour on a Sunday evening and Grampa Charlie (who never joined them) sat in the kitchen with his toe tapping along to the music. Although the school house was on the corner of farm property and the girls always had to come home to lunch, once Charlie, made sandwiches and carried them to the school house in snowstorm so that the "girls" could enjoy a lunch hour with the other students. One teacher, Euphemia Wilson, [later Euphemia Hart wife of Canon Hart of Lower Norton remembers boarding at the Thorne's. By then Grampa Charlie had a serious heart condition and no longer came down stairs on a daily basis. Charlie Thorne was great friends with his uncle and cousin across the road. He would share farm equipment and often visit with his uncle, Jacob Thorne and later, his son, Roy Thorne. Charlie would always sit in a little ladder back chair by the kitchen stove and Roy's children can still see him sitting there. The chair was auctioned in 1985 and bought by Richard Thorne, Charlie's great grandson.

Charlie also was very close to his sister Agnes [Mrs. Jesse Perry] and they would often visit back and forth. He did not get along with his brother Wilford Thorne after they had an argument over a property line. [Thorne Book]
