Individual Details
THOMAS COREY
(Sep 1723 - Feb 1778)
He is the descening child in our line.
[Corey Book]
This Thomas Corey led an uneventful life on the homestead at North Kingston RI, where he lived and died. There is little to say of him. However, his wife, Elizabeth Drake's ancestry is of considerable interest to descendants.
Elizabeth's Drake ancestry
Elizabeth's Drake ancestry has been the subject of much speculation, in an attempt to link her with the great English pirate and circumnavigator, Sir Francis Drake. Sir Francis had no descendants, leaving his estate to his brother, to be divided at a later date. Al Bertis Corey actually presents a lineage directly to this brother. However, Fred and Cynthia Bartlett in their illuminating article, "Gideon Corey, his Drake Ancestry," study the problem in some detail, and conclude that the connection cannot be made.
This lineage was of particular interest to the descendants of Gardner Corey of Temperance Vale NB, who, in the early part of the Twentieth Century, spent considerable time and effort, including trips to England, to make the link. This had to do with the disbursal of Sir Francis' estate, and the hope of establishing a right to a portion of the estate. The effort was unsuccessful.
Her Mayflower ancestry
However, an examination of Elizabeth Drake's Mayflower ancestry is much more fruitful. On her maternal side she was a direct descendant of William White and his son, Peregrine. Both were Mayflower passengers, and all descendants of Gideon Corey in this volume can claim Mayflower ancestry through Elizabeth to William and Peregrine. The Mayflower line is:
1. William White
2. Peregrine White
3. Jonathan White
4. Esther White -m.- Captain John Drake
5. Elizabeth Drake -m.- Thomas Corey
6. Gideon Corey
The line, has been proven, and those wishing to apply for Mayflower membership should have little difficulty in making their claim.
