Dana writes, "they farmed on the old Humphrey farm which was granted to William Humphrey the Loyalist." Vernon made headlines on 4 Sep 1980, when
Black Bear Trees Canaan River Man.
It was about a mile back to the truck [Vernon relates], and I got up the mountain and around the turn, and here was this big black bear stripping the nickel off the side of the truck and trying to tear the windows out. I started to holler and yell --- people always told me to do that --- and he started for me. I wasn't long getting out of there! I went into the bushes and the oak trees were smooth as stove pipe, but there was one with a few limbs on it, right beside a bigger one, and I wiggled my way up to the top of it. But he knew where I'd stepped off the road, and he came right up to the base of the tree, sniffing around, going back and forth across the road. He was a great big fellow, an awful old bear. He must have stayed there about 15 minutes, but finally wandered off into bush, and I eased down out of the tree and back to the truck."
A few days later, Vernon said, "the pressure let go and I was eating a lot of nerve pills and stuff. I thought they might have to take me to the hospital."
Ira reported to the government, "the bears are taking over the country, and something's got to be done."
