ZADOC RYDER

Fremont Rider book: On the tax list of Phillipse Patent, New York 1777; Listed in 1790 Census as having 1 adult male, 4 male children and 2 females in his family. Mentioned in his father's will.

Zadoc was the other American Loyalist in this family. A "carpenter and Joiner" by trade, he was branded a Loyalist during the Revolution, and his land, situated next to his mother, "widow Rider," was confiscated and sold in 1785, the deed signed by Zadoc and his wife Anne, hur X cros." However, he was not forced to flee the country like his brother Ebenezer. About 1795, following the death of his wife Anne, Zadoc moved to Herkimer County, N.Y., where he is found in the 1800 census, and where he was employed by the town of Litchfield as pathmaster, fence-viewer and commissioner of highways. He is buried there. See NYGBR 83,224.
