Individual Details

SHERMAN GRANT (WILLIAM GRANT) COREY

(12 Oct 1897 - )

He was adopted by his uncle Samuel Corey under the name Sherman Corey. For continuation see Fam#214. [Corey Book]

Sherman was the child of Grant and Mina Corey, and was adopted by his uncle Samuel Corey shortly after the death of Mina from tuberculosis. His name was changed in a way that requires some explanation. According to Stanley Corey, he was born Wiliam Grant Corey, son of Grant William Corey and Mina May Corey. He was then adopted by Mina's childless brother Samuel, who changed the boy's name to Grant Sherman Corey, and this is how it appears on the 1901 census for Temperance Vale. Later it was changed to Sherman Grant Corey, and he was known by the name Sherman. For the purposes of this genealogy, it is given here as Sherman Grant William Corey.

His age underwent similar transformation. On the 1901 census it is given as 12 Oct 1897, and that must be considered the most reliable. Later Sherman said he was born on 12 Sep 1897. Later family members gave the year as 1898.

Sherman farmed in Temperance Vale NB. He retired to live with his daughter, Glenna, at Mouth of Keswick NB.
