WILLIAM HENRY RYDER

Fremont Rider book: Clergyman, Educator, Soldier. During his childhood the family moved to Oberlin and in 1861 he entered Oberlin College. In 1864 he enlisted the Federal Army and was a non-commissioned officer in the 150th Ohio volunteers. Became a second lieuteant in the 5th regiment US colored troops. Though severely wounded at the siege of Richmond, October 27th, 1864 he remained in the army until the regiment was mustered out, September 1865. Returned to Oberlin, where he was graduated 1866. He studied theology at Oberlin for a year and then went to Andover, Theological Seminary 1869. Ordained pastor of the Congregational Church at Watertown, Wisconsin 1869. In 1870 he became professor of Greek at Oberlin and remained until 1877, when he went to the First Congregtional Church at Ann Arbor. Ten years later, he resigned to become professor of New Testament at Andover Seminary Iowa College.
