A Sandy Springs woman who had threatened to commit suicide died after police shot her on her condominium balcony Friday. Fulton County police said that Carol Whitmire, who had been in a standoff with authorities for more than 24 hours, shot at a SWAT team negotiator, prompting officers to return fire shortly after 6 p.m. Whitmire, 41, fell from her third-floor luxury condo and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she later died. Authorities had no explanation for why she had threatened suicide. Fulton police Lt. Dexter White said Whitmire's brother called police Thursday afternoon to ask that they check on her welfare. They arrived to find her barricaded in her home in the Regent at Glenridge complex on Northland Drive. A SWAT team was called and had tried to negotiate with her since 5 p.m. Thursday. Residents of the condominium complex were evacuated late Friday afternoon when Whitmire appeared on the balcony with a gun.
