He patented land from the Federal Gov ernment on 25 August 18 23 in Clay County, Indiana. John Chance was in the 1850 and 1860 Va n Buren County, Arkansas Censuses. John's wife, Anna, was born abo u t 1791 or 1792 in North Carolina. He remarried later in Conway Coun ty, Arkansa s, in 1862 or 1863. A Union sympathizer, he was hanged i n about 1863 by Confed erate General Joseph Shelby's men for apparentl y leading raids against pro-Conf ederate families' farms and plantatio ns.
