(Submitted by Paddy McCullough) The purpose of this text is to provid e my two sons and their Families with background of the McCullough fam ily and those happenings that I can recall through my youth. My fathe r was born Ralph Murphy McCullough on January 23, 1903 in Comanche Cou nty Oklahoma to John Adelbert and Mary Louise McCullough. Grandfathe r John Adelbert McCullough was born on March 11, 1861 exactly 99 year s before our son Don in Iroquois county Illinois to Soleman B. McCullo ugh and Melinda Chamness McCullough. In between the birth of one Sist er Jessie B. McCullough and another Sister Mable Louise there were eig ht brothers born. Papa, my favorite name for my father, was the sixt h of the eight brothers. Both Sisters died early; Jessie at age 5 an d Mable at age 4 months. When grandfather and grandmother sold the fa rm in Oklahoma they bought two cars and took the family on an extende d vacation in Colorado. Papa being the mechanic was responsible for ke eping the cars running and brakes working on the trip. I remember it b eing indicated that the trip took a big step in consuming the larges t portion of the revenue received in the sale of the farm. In their l ater years, Grandfather and Gandmother ran a small grocery store in th e front area (living room) of their house in Amarillo, Texas. It wa s a real treat to go in the grocery store area of the house and reac h in the cookie bins to get a cookie. Never was this done without firs t getting approval from Grandfather which was never a sure bet you wou ld get it, the approval or the cookie. It was customary for all the f amily around Amarillo to meet at their house for the Sunday meal. Aft er the adults would eat the children were fed and were then off to th e Movie Theater with the older ones making sure every one stayed toget her. The movie consisted of at least one cartoon, a news reel which g ave updates about the World War II theaters in Europe and the Pacifi c and if we were lucky a western movie starring the greats like Gene A utry, Hopalong Cassidy, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger and hi s sidekick Tonto. The movie house was in the San Jacinto section of A marillo on old highway 66. While the young ones spent the afternoon a t the movies the wives cleaned up after the meal and visited while th e brothers played croquet. Grandfather had two croquet courts on th e lot next to the house. These courts were drug and rolled before eac h game. The men spent those Sunday afternoons playing croquet.
