BIOGRAPHY: George D. Martz was born March 31, 1786 in Frederick County , Marylan d to Johan Georg and Anna Maria (Quierin) Martz. George marr ied August 21, 18 09 to Catharine E. Reese in Frederick County, Maryla nd, born March 8, 1787 to J acob and Catherine (Derr) Reese. George w as confirmed at the Evangelical Luthe ran Church in Frederick on May 2 5, 1806. George Martz raised a company of Citi zen soldiers around 18 08. He was made Captain of the Frederick County Military which guard ed French Naval prisoners at the Old Barracks. On January 6, 1812, Ca ptain Martz resigned from the 16th Regiment of Maryland Militia. On M ay 28t h of that year, however, the 16th Regiment was ordered to assem ble and be ready for action by Colonel Ritchie. George was activate d with the rank of Captain on June 26th. He served for the duration o f the War of 1812. His regiment w as stationed at the Old Barracks o n August 15, 1812 and later were moved to Bal timore, camping near For t McHenry. In 1814, the British entered Chesapeake Bay and all the F rederick County militias were ordered to defend Baltimore. On Se ptem ber 12-13th, the British Fleet bombarded Fort McHenry. Captain Mart z and t he 16th Regiment were held in reserve for the defense of Balti more. Later, Geo rge Martz said that he entered Fort McHenry before t he bombardment began, to ob tain his orders. He was unable to leave w hen it began. According to "The Mart zes of Maryland", "the night o f September 13, 1814 was the longest in George D . Martz' life. The b ombardment was terrific, but only one man was injured. Ou r flag wa s still waving in spite of the bombardment. With the light of dawn , C aptain George D. Martz was relieved to see that 'Our Flag' was st ill there. C aptain George D. Martz was still in the bomb-proof shelt er when the British War ships steamed down the Bay." George returne d to his regiment in Baltimore afte rward. On July 15, 1814 Captain M artz was appointed a Major of the Militia, be ing a staff officer fo r the 16th Regiment. He mustered out in the fall of 1814 . He receiv ed a farm from his father on November 21, 1821. The Major, as he w a s called the rest of his life, was appointed Magistrate for Frederic k County o n May 1, 1828. He held this position of responsibility unti l December 31, 1844 . Among other things remembered about George Mart z was that he was very progre ssive and enterprising, having one of th e best farms in the county. He was a Wh ig in politics. He wrote hi s will in Frederick County on January 9, 1868. He died on February 23 rd. Catherine had died on January 20, 1858. Both are burie d in th e Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.
