He inherited the home plantantion from his father in Craven County . More than 30 land deeds for Anso n County, on Cape Fear, can be fou nd. At one time he must have owned more than a thousand acres of ric h land in and around Fayetteville, North Carolina. He made his Will o n March 13, 1779 and it was probated in April of 1779. The Will was s igned with the last named spelled as "Stevens". To his wife he "lent " fo r life the plantation, and one-half of the grist and saw mills, a s well as one one Negro boy named Sharper and a Negro girl named Chari ty. The remainder of h is property was left to son James and his daug hters.
