Nicholas Tice

BIOGRAPHY: He was raised in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia and move d in 1806 t o Floyd County, Virginia. He served as a soldier in the W ar of 1812. A member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Floyd County, Ni cholas received communion there on May 21, 1815. In 1831, Nicholas m oved his family to what became the town o f Athens, in Menard County , Illinois. He founded a settlement that became know n as Tice. Th e 1902 history of Menard County described Nicholas Tice as follow s: " a small, heavy set German, he always rode a sorrel mare, with a slit i n t he face. He was a funny little man and the boys in Petersburg alw ays had a lot of fun with Mr. Tice. He would sometimes get a littl e jubilant, but was alway s in a good humor."
