During the Depression it was dif ficult for him to keep a steady job. He did carpentry work here an d there, and was often in Florida with his wife' s sister Bess and he r family. For a time, Ma and Pa lived at #3 Broad Avenue ( East 79t h Street, Cleveland, Ohio). Michael Rastatter Sr. remembers Ma and Pa ' s summer home on the "trailer park" property of the old Euclid Beac h amusement park (opened in the late 1800s and closed in 1969). It wa s a small cinder bloc k building with front porch and very small fron t lawn. Pa worked as a tile roo fer as a young man. He was tall an d slender, was never without his pipe and se ldom missed an Indian's b aseball game on the radio. Jane Kochenderfer remember s that he coul d stand on his head, "even when he was quite old". She also reme mber s that Pa built the Hugh and Mary O'Neil (his daughter) a large, walk- in "d oll house" that Granddughters Sally and Jane played in as they w ere growing up. That structure was located at the family's East 208t h street home off Lake Sh ore Blvd. in Euclid, Ohio.
