Wilber Pearly and Laura Alice Davis lived in Altus, Oklahoma in a so d home. Their son Ancil was born in that soddy.--story told to Rhoda D avis by Peggy Davis

A SON' S GOODBYE

ONE OF MY FAILINGS ALWAYS WAS THAT I LIKED TO ARGUE TOO MUCH, ALWAYS W ANTED TO GET IN THE LAST WORD. IF DAD COULD SPEAK TODAY, I'M SURE THA T HE WOULD SAY "BUD, YOU'RE DOING IT AGAIN"

I'D SAY TO HIM "I'M GETTING THE LAST WORD AGAIN, DAD, TOUGH IT OUT!"

BROTHER MURRAY HAS DONE A GOOD JOB. HE'S DONE A GOOD JOB AT WHAT WA S A HARD JOB. IT WAS A HARD JOB BECAUSE AS MANY OF YOU KNOW THE CHURC H HAS CERTAIN RULES THAT IT'S PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSED TO GO BY. THIS IS G OOD BECAUSE I'M SURE WE'RE BETTER BECAUSE OF IT. ANCIL DAVIS DIDN'T A LWAYS GO BY THESE RULES. MANY OF US WOULD HAVE PREFERRED FOR HIM TO G O TO CHURCH MORE. WE WOULD HAVE PREFERRED FOR HIM TO BE MORE EXPRESSI VE, MORE OPEN IN HIS LOVE FOR THE LORD. SOME OF US WHO KNEW HIM WEL L MIGHT SAY THAT AT TIMES HE COULD HAVE BEEN KINDER, MORE UNDERSTANDIN G. THE SAME COULD BE SAID OF ME & PROBABLY OF YOU......AND YOU.....AN D YOU.....AND YOU. SOME OF US MIGHT SAY THAT HE WAS SOMETIMES TOO HAR SH, TOO IMPATIENT. LET ME REMIND YOU THAT SO WAS PETER....SO WAS JAME S.....SO WAS JOHN.

ANCIL DAVIS, LIKE EACH ONE OF US, WILL BE JUDGED ON EVERYTHING THAT WE NT INTO THAT LIFE, AND ON EVERYTHING THAT CAME OUT OF IT. AND THE RIP PLES ARE STILL GOING OUT, AND WILL BE GOING OUT FOR A LONG.....LONG... .. TIME.

MAYBE I SHOULD REMIND YOU THAT WHEN THE JUDGEMENT DAY COMES.... I WON' T BE THE JUDGE....YOU WON'T BE THE JUDGE....OUR PREACHER WON'T BE TH E JUDGE. GOD WILL BE THE JUDGE.... AND THE DECISION WILL BE RIGHT.

THERE'S A LESSON HERE TODAY FOR EACH OF US. THE CASE OF ANCIL DAVIS I S OVER. BUT THE CASE FOR JOHN DAVIS IS NOT OVER. NOR IS THE CASE FO R YOU, AND YOU... AND YOU. I STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE A BETTER CAS E FOR MYSELF. WE STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE OUR LIVES FIT MORE CLOSE LY TO THE PATTERN, THE PERFECT PATTERN WE HAVE TO FOLLOW. I ASK EAC H ONE OF YOU , I BEG EACH ONE OF YOU TO MAKE GOOD USE OF THIS CHANCE ! DON'T WASTE IT!

IN A LITTLE DIFFERENT VEIN, NOW, LET ME SUGGEST, THAT AS THE WORLD JUD GES MEN AND THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, ANCIL DAVIS WAS AN OUTSTANDING MAN.

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW THAT HE WAS THE VALEDICTORIAN OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL CL ASS, THAT HE HAD A SCHOLARSHIP TO ARKANSAS UNIVERSITY. BUT IT WAS DUR ING THE DEPRESSION, AND THINGS DIDN'T WORK OUT.

HE'S ALWAYS HAD A LOVE FOR BOOKS, A REAL THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE. HE WA S QUITE KNOWLEDGEABLE ON A COUPLE OF DOZEN SUBJECTS. HE AND MOTHER GA VE US ALL A LOVE FOR BOOKS. I'M SURE THAT THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE BEE N OUT TO THE HOUSE KNOW WHAT I MEAN. YOU COULD WRITE A SCIENCE FICTIO N STORY ABOUT IT. BOOKS ARE IN EVERY ROOM. THEY'RE CREEPING ALONG EV ERY WALL. THEY'RE LURKING IN EVERY CORNER. SOMEDAY THEY MAY JUST GE T TOGETHER AND TAKE OVER THE WHOLE HOUSE!!

ANCIL DAVIS WAS A LEADER. VIRTUALLY ALL OF HIS WORKING LIFE HE WA S A SUPERVISOR IN ONE CAPACITY OR ANOTHER. MANY OF HIS "WORKING FRIEN DS" ARE HERE TODAY, GOING BACK AS FAR AS THE 40's, A COUPLE OF UNCLE S WHO WORKED WITH HIM BEFORE I WAS BORN EVEN, WHEN HE RAN A SAWMIL L & OPERATED A MINE. HE WAS WELL LIKED AND RESPECTED BY THOSE WHO WOR KED WITH HIM & FOR HIM, AND THEY GOT THE JOB DONE. THAT'S WHAT THE WO RLD LOOKS FOR.

AS A FAMILY MAN & A FATHER HE WAS OUTSTANDING TOO. HE PROVIDED WELL F OR HIS FAMILY. WHEN THE KIDS NEEDED NEW CLOTHES, WE GOT NEW CLOTHES . AND AS I'M SURE MANY OF YOU HAVE DONE, OFTEN HE AND MOM MADE DO WIT H THEIR OLD CLOTHES.

BUT AS I EXPECT MANY OF YOU ARE, WHEN IT CAME TO EXPRESSING LOVE & APP RECIATION TO THOSE NEAREST AND DEAREST, HE WAS FROM THE OLD SCHOOL. H E WAS OFTEN ROUGH SPEAKING & TENDERNESS CAME HARD FOR HIM. BUT I'M HA PPY TO SAY IN THE LAST FEW YEARS HE GRADUATED FROM THE OLD SCHOOL TO T HE NEW SCHOOL.

I HAVE A LESSON FOR EACH OF YOU HERE TODAY. THIS MAY SEEM A LITTLE FU NNY TO SOME OF YOU, BUT IF YOU ARE SITTING BESIDE SOMEONE WHO IS DEA R TO YOU, I'M GOING TO ASK YOU TO HOLD HIS OR HER HAND. NOW SQUEEZE I T 1.....2....3 TIMES. THAT SAYS "I LOVE YOU". IF THE WORDS SOMETIME S STICK IN YOUR THROAT THIS WILL BE EASIER. YOU'LL BE SURPRISED TOO H OW MANY TIMES YOU CAN USE THIS WAY WHEN ITS NOT PRACTICAL TO SAY IT AL OUD. WHENEVER I LEAVE HOME, DRIVING, I'LL HONK THE HORN 3 TIMES, OU R FAMILY HAS DONE THIS FOR 23 YEARS. GET OUT OF THE OLD SCHOOL!

DAD & I HAVE HAD A LOT OF REALLY GOOD TIMES TOGETHER; HUNTING, SHOOTIN G, TRAVELING, BUILDING, WORKING ON OUR CARS & MACHINES, FARMING, WALKI NG AROUND, AND JUST SITTING FOR HOURS TALKING IN FRONT OF THE FIREPLAC E.

I OWE A LOT TO MY DAD... I GOT A LOT FROM MY DAD ..... I GOT A LOT B Y HEREDITY AND I GOT A LOT BY LEARNING, LISTENING, WATCHING, JUST FOL LOWING ALONG.

WE DON'T GET A CHANCE TO PICK OUR DADS. IF I'D HAD THE CHANCE TO PIC K MY DAD.... I MIGHT HAVE PICKED A BETTER ONE.... I DON'T KNOW.... WHA T I DO KNOW... WITHOUT A SHADOW OF DOUBT IS THAT I CERTAINLY COULD HAV E DONE A WHOLE LOT WORSE... I SURELY COULD HAVE DONE A WHOLE LOT WORSE ,

ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY NOW, I'D LIKE TO THANK EACH ONE OF YOU FOR COM ING TODAY. I'D LIKE TO THANK EACH ONE WHO BROUGHT OR SENT FLOWERS. I 'D LIKE TO THANK EACH ONE WHO BROUGHT FOOD. I'D LIKE TO THANK EACH ON E WHO COMFORTED. IT'S BEEN WONDERFUL!

I'M SURE YOU KNOW THAT MOTHER WILL STILL NEED SOME MORE HELP FOR AWHIL E UNTIL THINGS KIND OF SMOOTH OUT. I'M JUST AS SURE THAT THE HELP WIL L BE THERE, SO I'M THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE.

LET ME JUST CLOSE NOW AND SAY THANKS TO EACH ONE OF YOU.

THANKS DAD.... I LOVE YOU...GOOD BYE DAD..... SEE YOU LATER. - JOH N W DAVIS
