John Wilber (Bud) Davis wrote this about his maternal grandfather Joh n Clarence Carter:

A Last Memory of "Johnny Cahtah"

I have many fond memories of Grandpa Carter. Memories of those golde n summer days of youth, making hay, threshing, politicing on the squar e in Harrison on Saturday, Gospel meetings with gas lanterns hissing , - even riding the horse that pressed out the sorghum for molasses . All of these wonderful times shared with a wonderful Grandfather a t a time when the country was going through a transition to more moder n things in an area which may have been behind the times too.

We all know grandparents are much more lenient with grandchildren tha n their own children, and there is usually more money to spare and few er responsibilities for all. I'm sure that those of you who experienc ed the hard times and the toil of the "good old days" have a far diffe rent view of those times than I do. I was fortunate to come along a t just the right time, I guess, just at the tail end of the old days . About all I can remember are the good parts of those carefree day s from 7 to 14 years old or so. All boys have heros at that age. An d although I was around him enough to know that he wasn't perfect, sti ll that image has tarnished but very little since that time.

On now to what I'll always think of as my last memory of Johnny Carter . It was the July 4 week of 1969, I think - it might have been '70 . I think it was the last funeral Grandpa Carter was called on to pre ach. We drove down, he and I, to Yellville, I believe, in my yellow J eep. I'm sure you all remember that for several years, Grandpa couldn 't hear well at all, and that his walk was a little unstable at times . So before we got there I determined that I wasn't going to be asham ed, no matter what kind of blunder he might make, and I honestly expec ted some. I needn't have worried.

We passed a couple of older ladies as we entered the building. One o f them said, "Oh, he's so small."

The other one said, "Wait till you hear him speak, and you won't thin k that at all." Grandpa didn't even hear them.

Then to my amazement, he delivered one of the most stirring sermons I' ve ever heard! I wasn't ashamed of anyone that day, not even ashame d of the big tears that rolled down my face for 15 minutes.

Thanks, Grandpa for the many wonderful times we had together, I'm prou d to the the grandson of that BIG "little man" they called Johnny Caht ah.
