The earliest thing I remember in my life was our home at 711 25-mile a venue in Hereford, Texas, my place of birth. 25-mile avenue might sou nd like a strange name for a street but it was called that for the len gth of the road within the borders of Deaf Smith County. Deaf Smith Co unty was named after a scout who served under General Sam Houston duri ng the battles as Texas fought for its independence to become a free s tate from Mexico.
Now back to my place of birth, the house was a small stucco house wit h 2 bedrooms. I was the third and last child born to Mother and Papa o n August 24, 1935. Their first child was a son Donald Ray named afte r Papa's two younger brothers who was born on December 25, 1925 in Law ton, OK. Their second child was a daughter named Norma Jean born Decem ber 4, 1929 in Hereford, TX.
I'll never know the sacrifice that Mother and Papa made for us kids th at we might have something for our Christmas. There was always a mai n gift like a baseball bat, or a toy airplane or a toy truck and alway s a Christmas sock filled with an orange, apple, ribbon candy and nut s in their shells. The ribbon candy was as hard as boiler plate stee l and it sure lasted just as long. You had to lick it for days befor e you started getting some flavor. I don't think to this day that I wa s able to get through the shells of some of the nuts. The hard ribbo n candy and the tough nutshells provided many hours of entertainment.
