Nickname:<NICK> Chloe BIOGRAPHY: Ora Chloe was the only survivin g daughter of James Madison Faulkner and Martha Lavina Willey. She wa s born 16 October 1887 i n Owen County, Indiana, and died 16 April 195 4 in Villa Grove, Douglas County, Illinois, where she is also buried w ith her husband. She was my great-grandmoth er. "Chloe," as she prefe rred to be called, married John Emery Shunk (1881-195 8) in Indiana. T hey had 6 children, the youngest of whom was Wilma Shunk (1921- 1991) . Wilma remembers soft molasses cookies that were simply the best. S he a lso remembers that Chloe was a no-nonsense woman, who was fairl y intolerant of her husband John and his laid-back personality. She al so remembers that her gra ndparents kept chickens, and once, a freshl y slaughtered bird ran under her dre ss. As a little girl, having a de capitated chicken under your skirt flapping ar ound makes an impressio n! She also recalls that her grandma had a huge garden ( she had 6 chi ldren to feed) and a summer kitchen; so Chloe was probably also a cann er. She would have needed to be, living during the Depression. The Fa ulkne rs were very poor. Grandma Chloe would make gifts of whatever s he happened to have on hand at Christmastime.
