James Langdon

BIOGRAPHY: A James Langdon was mentioned as a son-in-law in the Will o f a Willi am Messer. Whether as an orphan he was adopted by the Messe rs' or had married a Messer daughter at an early age, is unknown. At a ny rate, James Langdon did marry Patty Stevens(on), a daughter of Solo mon and Sarah Stephenson. The coupl e evidently settled in the Pleasa nt Grove and Elevation Township areas of Johns ton County, North Carol ina. A 1975 Johnston County map shows a Langdon Road ru nning from Pl easant Grove Township into Elevation Township. Also, there is a S tep henson Road in Pleasant Grove Township and another Stephenson Road sho wn in Elevation Township. James Langdon served ten months in the Nort h Carolina Mili tia under Captains Railford and Williams during the Re volutionary War. He was said to have been in service at the time tha t Norfolk, Virginia was burned, and in the Gates defeat at Camden. I n addition to any possible previous land hold ings, James Langdon acqu ired 300 acres on March 25, 1791 and 150 acres more on April 14, 1794 . This real estate was either on or near Black Creek on what is now P leasant Grove Township, North Carolina. In 1815, after his wife Patt y die d, James married a Catherine Beamon in Montgomery County, Nort h Carolina. The James Langdon family then migrated to Owen County, In diana a few years before h e died on about November 1, 1835.
