Gemima Hicks?/Harrison?

(1755 - 1855)

Speculation on Jemima's Maiden Name, by Patrick Morgan Harrison
There is a part of the 1800 Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina that may give a clue to the whereabouts of the family of James Barron and his wife Jemima.

#989 Benjamin Stevenson
#990 Jemina Stevens 20000-10011-00
#991 James Barnes 41010-21110-00

When reviewing the actual census record, it appears that the census taker left off the "on" from Jemima Stevens name and quite possibly her name [like Benjamin] is also "Stevenson." Number 984 in the same census lists a John Grissom (Gresham). Our James Barron will eventually sell land to a John Gresham.

A close survey of the numbers after James Barnes name reveals that the age of the males and females in the census approximate the ages of James Barron's family. As closely as I can "guesstimate," James Barron had six or seven male children and four female children by 1800. The first four males are under ten, the next is 10-16, and the father would be 26-45. Joseph Barron was around ten, and James Barron was around 45-48 years old. We don't know when the daughters were born but Jemima was at least 45 years old at this time.

If this is indeed our James Barron (not Barnes), then it is entirely possible that the Jemina Stevens[on] living next door is the mother of Jemima Barron. In that event, James Barron married a Jemima Stevens[on].

.

The memorial tombstone for Gemima reads: "Gemima, died 1855 having lived near one hundred years."

It should be noted that other Barron genealogists speculate that Jemima's maiden name was "Hicks."

(CONTINUATION OF DISCUSSION OF VITAL INFORMATION ON JAMES AND GEMIMA BARRON BY BETH HILLIS...SEE END OF NOTES ON JAMES FOR FIRST PART OF THE FOLLOWING DISCUSSION)

THEREFORE, we are either dealing with 2 different James Barron or information is incorrect on the tombstone on James Barron graves in GA. We do not know who placed these markers on the graves or when and their source of information? This could be incorrect and misleading, to say the least. This would not be the first time mis-informed but well-intended people place incorrect information on tombstones.

As far as the Rev. War service of James Barron - I have yet to find records of James serving "South Carolina Patriots." Would love to have copy of the document. [stated and based on again, the grave marker in GA]

In The First 100 Years, text by Judge C. W. Crush, p. 37:
"Believed to be a record of Service against the Indians" and Henry Baron is listed. Also, he lists the persons sworn to the state before John Montgomery, "oath of allegiance and fidelity" 23 Sept 1777, Joseph Barron, Sr.; 25 Sept 1777, Joseph Barron; Sept 18, 1777, John Barron, William Barron, Henry Barron. [note: no record of JAMES w/his brother and father?] When did James part ways with his family and move to SC?

The marriage of JAMES BARRON - again, conflicting research: Jemima Hicks or Jemima \\? no proof on any marriage date\name to date - no documents - probate of James Barron estate in GA and the grave marker in GA stating her name was Gemima.? TN\NC records bear no dowry release or marriage for Jemima Hicks to James Barron. First records of JAMES BARRON in SC - 1791 [Pendleton District]

Now, as to the children of James and Gemima\Jemimah\Jemima.....

There has NEVER been any proof that Samuel [b.1785] is a son of James and Gemima - this too, is my direct line [father of Mary Barron Barron who md. Rev. John Clayton Barron-my gg grandparents]. There is NO mention of Samuel in the administration of the estate of James Barron, GA and no evidence whatsoever as to SAMUEL being the son of James. I am in contact w/a direct descendant of this SAMUEL of SC in hopes of him participating in our DNA project - then, we can exclude or include him in this line - until then - I do not have him listed as a son of James. I have offered up documentation to his marriage previously on this board as NANCY TITSWORTH as well and explanation discounting this SAMUEL having been married to POLLY LEONARD. There is, however, another Samuel Barron, md. to a Polly Leonard but my Samuel Barron was md. to Nancy Titsworth. PLEASE READ THE PRIOR POSTING on this board.

As to GABRIEL BARRON, also my direct line and my ggg grandfather, there has NEVER been documented proof that he married a CLAYTON - this has always been speculative as his first son was named : JOHN CLAYTON BARRON [my gg grandfather]. No documentation thereof. NO proof of the death of Gabriel in 1864 in Winn Parish - his last census records was 1860 in Winn Parish and last pd. civil war tax collected in 1864 by Mrs. G.M. Barron of Winn Parish. No grave marker ever located. No records of either Gabriel or Martha found after 1864. If anybody has documentation I would love to have it and would appreciate any and all.

Like I stated above, I desire that my direct line of research be correct if it is going to be proliferated on the www - I know you stated your sources of the information you published but it still does not make it ALL correct as not all researchers have documentation to their research and not all www. searcher take the time to research each and every source to make sure it is documented or speculative and merely copy it and proliferate the incorrectness. I think we can all relate to wanting our family information to be correct to hand down to our descendants and that is all I request.

I am a very open-minded researcher and I gladly share all of my research and documentation to further my cause of correctness so please don't take this rebuttal as a personal attack - the posting just happened to step on that last nerve,,,,if you know what I mean.

Sincerely,
Beth Hillis

In a note posted on the Barron Circle discussion forum in 2008, Beth noted the following:

The DAR member who used James Barron of GA as her entry was the late, Louise Barron McCraw of Greenville, MS. She d. in 2003 in Forrest City, AR. [b. Ackerman, MS]. She is the only applicant who used JB of GA - there has been no other according to DAR records.

The record she used:

BARRON, James
Birth: MD Circa 1753
Service: NC
Rank: PS
Death: GA Before (ante) 4-5-1850
Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No
Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No
Spouse: (1) Jemima X

Copy of her application can be ordered from DAR.

********************************
The following verbiage is originally from Patrick Harrison:

Years ago (sorry I don't have DAR number) a lady joined the DAR on the service of Joseph Barron of Washington Co., Tn. Years later, when the DAR was weeding out those applications that did not meet the new DAR standards, it was discovered that Joseph (we call Elias) Barron was not a soldier in the ARW but his son Joseph was. Therefore, a
check mark was placed on Joseph's DAR line so that anyone who joined under the descendant line on the original application would recognize that Joseph Barron was not a soldier but is considered an ARW Patriot, considered eligible because he took the oath of allegiance in 1777 and purchased land in the new country. The original line is again open.

On October 9, 1999, my cousin in Mississippi, Louise Barron McCraw, used Joseph's application approval to join on her own line, the following descendant line:

1. Joseph Barron married Ann

2. James Barron married Jemimah

3. Joseph Barron married Hannah McClanahan

4. James Barron married Elizabeth Childress

5. Obediah Barron married Naomi Emma Clark

6. Robert Barron married Ruth Barron

7. Louise Barron married John McCraw, Jr.

The DAR accepted her descendant line and her DAR number is 794361

Essentially, the DAR has accepted that the James Barron who sold land with wife Jemimah in Washington County, Tn., is the same James Barron who died in Jerusalem Community, Choctaw County, Ga., and is buried there with his wife Jemimah. (This application does not address the question of James Barron's ARW service.) And, that this James Barron is the son of Joseph (sometimes called Elias) Barron. I make all of you aware of this event because now that the DAR has opened this line, it will surface in the LDS records and other genealogical sites on the internet. Also, any female descended from James and Jemimah Barron is eligible to use the same line. Male descendants can get a record copy of this line and join the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR.)
