Mary Jane CHILDRESS

(31 Oct 1832 - 25 Feb 1906)

According to a letter written by Pauline Kolb Thomas in 1960, "Aunt Polly, as Mrs. Thomas (Pauline's mother-in-law) called her mother-in-law, Mary Jane Childress Barron Thomas, was really the power behind the throne. She seemed to be the boss of the family, even of the money. Babe just adored his grandmother, she had died before we married in 1918..."
