John Harvey Walter
(June 30, 1862 - April 28, 1921)
Family tradition says that John Harvey (sometimes called Harvey John?) was "kidnapped" as a very small child by his Uncle, William Walter. Harvey was born in Bloomsburg, PA. His mother remarried and her name became Ellen Shoemaker and she lived and died in Bloomsburg, PA. Harvey Walter has many relatives in this area, although after he was kidnapped, WIlliam Walter brought him to Rockford, MN to raise him there.
According to the 1900 Census records, Harvey J. (John H.) Walter (36) and Mary (30) were living in Rockford, Wright County, MN. John listed as born in PA, Mary listed as born in MN. John Harvey Walter's parents were listed as born in PA and Mary Louise WILLCUTT's parents are listed as having been born in Massachusetts. In 1900 sons Arthur W., (9) b. SEP 1890 and Elmar L. (8) b. MAR 1892 and daughter Gladys (2) b. MAR 1898 all were living at home. John's occupation was listed as day laborer and they owned their home (with a mortgage).
He worked as a Lumberjack and went to harvest grain in North Dakota in the fall and then, son-in-law, Frank Weisner taught him the Shoe Repair trade and after that he bought his own shoe shop at Rockford and worked at this. John was a "shoe cobbler".
