Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2002 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville for Clarence J. Sand, age 79, of Paynesville who died Tuesday, April 2 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Fr. Richard Leisen will officiate. Burial will take place in the St. Louis Parish Cemetery with full military honors.
Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. on Thursday at the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. A Veteran Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by Parish Prayers at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday. Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville made the arrangements.
Clarence was born February 1, 1923 in New Munich, MN to Peter and Elizabeth (Thull) Sand. Clarence served in the U.S. Army in WWII from 1944-1946. After being honorably discharged, he enrolled at the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He graduated with a Masters in Mechanics. He worked at the New Munich Garage until 1954 when he married Shirley Eckberg on May 6, 1954. He worked for Vern Johnson Motors in Paynesville for 20 years. He worked for Loren Meyer for 5 years and then ran a gas station in Sauk Rapids for 3 years. He semi-retired and ran Saukinac Campground until he fully retired. Clarence loved fishing and woodworking. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, the VFW Post 2853 in Sauk Centre and the American Legion Post 271 in Paynesville.
Surviving Clarence is his wife Shirley, his three daughters Susan (Scott) Mertesd-orf, Sandra (Dennis) Stanger and Shelly (Richard) Lecher, his four grandchildren Trisha Stanger, Michael Sand and Zachary and Adam Lecher, his brothers Alcuin, Romuald, Levinus and Severin Sand and his sisters Marcella Fichtinger and Bertilla Caspers.
Preceding him in death are his parents, son Timothy, one sister and two brothers.
