The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn., for Sister Margretta Nathe who died on June 26, 2007, at Saint Scholastica Convent. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Friends may call at Saint Scholastica Convent, St. Cloud, on Thursday, June 28, from 1-6 p.m., or for a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Friday, June 29 at 11 a.m.

S. Margretta (Marina Anne) Nathe was born September 8, 1913, to John and Anne (Caspers) Nathe in Meire Grove, Minn. She attended St. John’s School in Meire Grove and Saint Benedict’s Academy in St. Joseph, Minn. Entering Saint Benedict’s Monastery on August 31, 1929, she was received into the novitiate on June 18, 1933, pronounced first monastic vows on July 11, 1934, and perpetual monastic vows on July 11, 1937. S. Margretta graduated from the College of Saint Benedict in 1938 with a B.A. in German and minors in English and Latin. Then followed an M.A. degree in German at the University of Toronto, in Toronto, Ontario, and further study at the University of Minnesota; St. Mary’s in Notre Dame; Georgetown University; Goethe Institute in Munich, Germany; and University of Freiburg in Germany. S. Margretta taught the fifth grade at Holy Angels, St. Cloud, and junior high school at Saints Peter and Paul in Belle Plaine, Minn. At the College of Saint Benedict, she taught in the Modern and Classical Language and Literature Department, was prefect of the students; dean of residence; director of development; helped publish the Benet and news service; a photographer; and executive secretary for the Alumnae Association. She directed the College overseas program and taught students abroad in Germany and Switzerland for ten years. Later she conducted German conversation classes for adults.

She spent many hours as a translator of German at Saint Benedict’s Monastery. In her later years, she served as hostess to funeral guests and toured many a guest who visited the monastery all year round. In 2001 she moved to Saint Scholastica Convent where she continued her ministry of prayer for the needs of her Benedictine community and the entire world.

S. Margretta is survived by the members of her Benedictine community, nieces and a nephew, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers: Leander and Father Giles, OSB; and five sisters: Agatha, Marcella, Armella Welle, Eleanor Rieland and Sister Ellenice, OSB.
