John H. Nathe

(November 26, 1875 - October 14, 1938)

2nd generation farmer at Meier Grove, MN

When John took over the farm in 1915 it was with the understanding that he and his wife, Anna Margaretha, would take care of his mother until her death. Anton died in 1900 at 65 years of age. Wills, in those days, were explicit. Anton's will left the farm to his son provided he take care of his mother and his brothers and sisters still at home.

His will read, "I bequeath to my son, John Nahte, all my real property, ...being 220 acres of land, and also all my personal property which I have or what may be owned by me at the time of my death, except one horse to be a healthy animal and one cow, one chitchen capinate (kitchen cabinet), one buriow (bureau) and one table, one sewing machine, one cooking stove and one bet (bed) stead and bet closthing, which above desc. real and personal property said John Nahte shall have and hold forever, but under the conditions that he will and shall pay to his mother Adelheid Nahte the sum of $1500.00 which amount shall stand as a loan on the above real estate and bear interest at five percent per annum, said John Nahte shall also not be entitled to the three rooms in the... (line of words cut off bottom of page here)...described real estate, which said rooms shall belong to my beloved wife Adelheid Nahte during her lifetime, said John Nahte shall also furnish all fuill (fuel) necessary for cooking and heating purposes and board and washing free of charge during the term of her natural life..."

Anton provided for each of his sons this way. The last three of his sons were to work for John until they turned 21, but John had to provide them with "board, all necessary clothing and wants. And $15 every year..." The older son was also asked to take care of his brothers if they became sick. The last part of his will reads, "...Should any of the sons mentioned above become sick or otherwise unable to earn his living each of them if shall be allowed "if so desitute" to use the house bequeathed to John as his home and said John Nahte shall be bound to attend to such, furnish all necessarys "except medicine or doctor" that is, so long any one of them shall remain single, and are not above the age of 30 years."

John's grandmother lived with them for several years. She died in 1928. John had married Anna Caspers, a girl who lived next door. She lived to be 96. "I can remember her telling that she remembered when the house was built here," said John, her grandson."

Two of John's girls became Catholic nuns, one in St. Joseph, Stearns Co., MN and the other in the Twin Cities. One of John's girls died of pneumonia.
