Joseph Dahl, age 52, of Saint James, MN., died Thursday, December 24, 2009, in St. James.
Joseph Alphonse Dahl was born July 1st, 1957 in Minneapolis, MN to Elmer & Geraldine (Fuchs) Dahl. They moved to Maple Lake and he attended and graduated from Annandale High School in 1975. He moved to Paynesville after graduation and started to do "ride alongs" with the Paynesville PD. He attended Arden Hills Training Center for Law Enforcement. His first job was at Canby, MN before being hired by the Watonwan County Sheriff's Department in 1978, where he served for 30 years, serving as Sheriff from 1999-2003. While on patrol in 1978 he stopped a speeder, Karen Kuehl whom he married September 15, 1979. His family and law enforcement were his life. Joe had the biggest heart and would do anything for anyone in need or less fortunate than he was. He loved to fly and learned this at age 40. He also got a tattoo to represent Law Enforcement "Una Stamos" (we are one). He collected some unusual things over the years and hated to hunt but loved sharing this adventure with his children. He enjoyed a fun game of golf as well. He was looking forward to fishing on the Missouri River.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years Karen, children Amber (Brandon) Winch & son Trevon, Sara Dahl and friend Justin Coyne U.S. NAVY Guam, Matthew and Michael still at home; brothers James & Margaret Dahl - Delano, MN, John & Kim Dahl-Spicer, MN, Jeff & Jackie Dahl-Belgrade, MN, Jerome Dahl-Paynesville, Jason Dahl & Michelle Wyatt-Cold Spring, MN, Jack & Peggy Dahl-Paynesville and sister Jo Ann & Denny Spaulding-Paynesville; brothers-in-law David & Susan Kuehl-Silverdale, WA, Keith & Mary Ann Kuehl-Winona, MN, Dwight & Betty Kuehl-St. James, MN, Kevin & Lauree Kuehl - Trimont, MN and sister-in-law Dawn & Trevor Nau-St. James, MN. and their families.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, sister Mary Dahl, brother Jacob Dahl, grandson Aiden Winch and parents-in-law Owen & Margaret Kuehl. Funeral service will be at St. James Catholic Church at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 31, 2009 with Celebrant Father Thomas Cook and Con-Celebrant Father Eberhard Schefers. Visitation will be at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be a Rosary at the funeral home at 4:00 PM on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in St. James.
