Arthur H. "Art" Schrader, a citrus grower, banker, cattleman and East Pasco community activist died Tuesday (March 15, 1994) at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. He was 62.

Mr. Schrader, who was born in San Antonio, made numerous contributions to the San Antonio and Saint Leo communities, including co-founding, designing and building the Saint Leo Abbey Golf Course and co-founding the San Antonio Dixie Youth Baseball League, in which he coached more than 20 consecutive years. He attended St. Anthony's Parochial School in San Antonio, St. Leo Preparatory School and Springhill College in Cullman, Ala.

He was the third-generation owner of San Antonio Lumber Co., which he had managed since 1950, and was active in citrus and cattle production in Pasco and Manatee counties.
Mr. Schrader was active in many financial organizations. He was former chairman of the board of the Bank of Pasco County and the First National Bank of the South, and also served on the boards of the Bank of Ormand on the Sea in Ormand Beach, Fla.; Citizens Bank of Pasco in Zephyrhills; and Florida Federal Savings and Loan in St. Petersburg. "He was truly one of the finest men I've ever known," said Rachel Piersall, senior vice president of SouthTrust Bank of West Florida, which recently purchased the First National Bank of the South.

"He was always smiling and always friendly, yet a very good businessman," Piersall said. "He was a great leader and citizen. If there's anyone you knew who you think went straight to heaven, it would be him. God got himself a good helper up there." Mr. Schrader's civic contributions were quite extensive. He was former president of the Pasco County Cattleman's Association; co-founder and former president of the San Antonio Jaycees; former Grand Knight of Council 1768 of the Knights of Columbus; former chairman of the St. Anthony Parish Council; former member of the Pasco County Commission Charter Committee; and a former trustee of Saint Leo College and the former Humana Hospital-Pasco, now Dade City Hospital.

He served as a member of the Diocese of St. Petersburg Catholic Education Foundation; the St. Anthony's School Endowment Fund, and as a board member of Operation LOVE, an orphanage mission in Korea, which he co-founded. Mr. Schrader and his wife, Mary, also donated the land for Schrader Elementary School in Bayonet Point.

Mr. Schrader is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Catherine Beaumont Schrader; four sons, Thomas A., Theodore J., and Terrence E., all of San Antonio, and Jerome G. of Dade City; two daughters, Mary Margaret "Peggy" Barons of Lexington, Mass., and Mary Kay Caroe of Woodbury, Conn., a brother, Herman A. of San Antonio; a sister, Maxine Cortese of Charlotte, N.C., and 19 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in San Antonio. Rosary services will be held Friday night at 8 p.m. at the church.
