He was a prominent attorney, entrepreneur and son of one of the county's most powerful families.
Jerry Schrader was also a small-town guy at heart. When news of his death Tuesday (Feb. 7, 2006) spread through his hometown, residents turned to the place they always look when one of their own dies. On the community bulletin board outside the post office, a brief note was posted: "Jerome 'Jerry' Schrader of San Antonio died suddenly on Feb. 7."

Mr. Schrader was at home Monday evening when he was struck by a severe headache. He was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he died the next morning surrounded by family.
Family members said a brain aneurysm was the cause of death. He was 48. "He was always funny, always had a smile on his face," said his aunt, Margaret Beaumont.

Mr. Schrader attended undergraduate and law school at the University of Florida. For many years thereafter, he had a tax and estate planning practice in Dade City. "He was really one of the only real estate planners in Dade City for many years," said his brother, County Commissioner Ted Schrader. "Many, many Pasco residents were assisted by him." Leonard Johnson, a high school friend with whom he formed a practice in 1990, called him "one of the smartest people I've ever met." "He had a real capacity for taking complicated things and making them simple concepts," Johnson said.

Hutch Brock, who later became a partner in the firm, said Mr. Schrader found success through sometimes unorthodox tactics. "He was brilliant, he was eccentric, he was unpredictable, and his clients loved him. That's probably why his clients loved him," Brock said.

But in 2000, Mr. Schrader went in search of another path. He bought into a Dade City company he had represented as an attorney that serves large stores by making their lighting systems more energy efficient. "He wasn't crazy about being an attorney and decided that he would buy into the corporation," said Lyn Knowles, chairman of A&K Energy Conservation Inc. Knowles said that as chief executive officer, Mr. Schrader doubled the fortunes of the company, whose clients include Publix and Wal-Mart.

A member of a prominent and politically active family, Mr. Schrader struck his own course, never following brothers Ted and Terry into campaigns for elected office. His most visible political experience came only in 1994 when he served as treasurer for Carl Littlefield's successful campaign for state representative. Littlefield recalled Tuesday that he once asked Mr. Schrader if he would ever seek office, "but he said that wasn't for him, although he said he really admired people that did run."

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Schrader was known as a loyal friend who enjoyed life.
"He was just a heck of a lot of fun," said Johnson. "He lived large. He just had such a great wit and sense of humor." "Jerry was his own person, and he always said what was on his mind," said Knowles. "And sometimes that got him in trouble. But you always knew where you stood."

Mr. Schrader had a stake in many properties throughout Pasco County. In 2004, he helped broker the sale of more than 1,000 acres of his family's land along Curley Road for $15.5-million to a home builder.
He vacationed every year in St. Martin but lived in a small yellow house overlooking Lake Jovita. His daughters shared a house next door. Amy Greif, a friend from their school days in San Antonio, said Mr. Schrader was visible in the little town. "He would take walks around town, and he always had a smile on his face."

In addition to his brothers Ted and Terry, Mr. Schrader is survived by his mother, Mary; brother Thomas; sisters Margaret Mary Barons and Mary Katherine Caroe; and daughters Tori, 17, and Elizabeth, 20.
A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 32848 Massachusetts Ave., San Antonio. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Hodges Family Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
