Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Asissi Catholic Church, St. Francis, for Lawrence J. Schmidt, 73, who died Wednesday at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 3:30 to 9 tonight at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Freeport, and one hour before services Saturday at the church in St. Francis. The Freeport Senior Citizens will pray at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home in Freeport followed by parish prayers at 7, the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard at 8 and the St. Francis Men's Society at 8:30.

Lawrence Schmidt was born in Millwood Township, Stearns County, to Bernard and Agnes (Rueter) Schmidt. He was in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during the Korean conflict. He married Rosemary Stangler on July 7, 1954, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Albany. The couple lived and farmed near Albany for two years, then moved to a farm north of Freeport, where they lived for 40 years. In addition to farming, he worked as a cattle breeder for 28 years, retiring in 1991 and moving to Melrose in 1996. He was a member of St. Francis of Asissi Catholic Church, the St. Francis Men's Society, the Freeport Senior Citizens, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 in Melrose.

Survivors include his wife; son and daughters, Michael of Melrose, Karen Linn of Grand Rapids, and Mary Jo Gruenes of Holdingford; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; and brothers and sisters, Bernard, Fritz, Aloys, Henry, Marie Westbrock, Theresa Urbaschich, Helen Duevel and Margaret Schmidt.
