New Munich - The funeral will be 10:30 am Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Daniel J. Baltes, 66, who died Thursday at his home. The Rev Tim Baltes will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30 pm today and 8 am until time of services Saturday at the church in New Munich. St. Joseph's Society, New Munich Lions and New Munich Fire Department will pray at 8 tonight at the church followed by parish prayers at 8:30. Arrangements were made by Patton-Schad Funeral Services, Melrose.
Daniel Baltes was born Jan 19, 1931 in Meire Grove to George and Josephine (Meyer) Baltes. He was a Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He married Doris Botz on June 4, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport. She died on May 20, 1985. He married Janice Schwieters on Sept 8, 1989 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Melrose. He was a teacher in Fairfax, and later in Albany, Grey Eagle and Melrose. He was a substitute teacher for many years while he began his career as an insurance agent with American Family Insurance. He also was a musician for more than 30 years, playing with the Ray Drontle Band, the Gil Stell Band and other area bands. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Munich Lions Club, St. Joseph's Society and a retired member of the New Munich Volunteer Fire Department. He was formerly a clerk of New Munich City Council and a past member of the church choir and the board of directors of the Freeport State Bank.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters, Mikel, Bloomington; Mark, Woodbury; William, Minnetonka; Eric and Karl, Minneapolis; Jan Barton, Boise, ID; Ann Erickson, Duluth; Kay, St. Cloud; brothers and sister, Ervin, Alexandria; Virgil, Blackduck; Walter, Superior, WI; Elmer, Brainerd; Alice Worms, Omaha, NE; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, LaVerne and Ralph; and sister Lucille Moran. Pallbearers will be Mike, Mark, Bill, Karl, Eric and Ervin Baltes, Ron Barton and John Botz. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Michael's Hospice in Sauk Centre.
