Services will be on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Anthony M. "Tony" Nieland, age 86, of St. Cloud, who died Sunday, January 12 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis. Reverend Timothy Wenzel will officiate. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls. Military honors will be provided by the St. Cloud Veterans of Foreign Wars Granite Post #428 and the Waite Park American Legion Silver Star Post #428. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday and after 9:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Parish prayers will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by the St. Cloud Veterans of Foreign Wars Granite Post #428 at 6:30 p.m. and the Waite Park American Legion Silver Star Post #428 at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home in St. Cloud.
Tony was born on January 7, 1917 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Bernard and Catherine (Thelen) Nieland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater as a German Translator. Tony married Alma M. Schaefer on June 19, 1948 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in St. Cloud. He was self-employed as a floor covering installer for many years, retiring in 1973. Tony was a member of the St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622, the Waite Park American Legion Silver Star Post #428, the St. Cloud Veterans of Foreign Wars Granite Post #428, and St. Anthony's Parish.
Survivors include his sons, Ricky (Bonnie) of St. Cloud and Thomas (Barbara) of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Jeremy, Christopher, and Nicholas Nieland; one great granddaughter, Morgan; one sister, Christine Weber of Luxemburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma, on October 28, 2002; son, Arthur, in 1972; infant son, Gary; six brothers, Julius, John, Frank, Al, Joe, and Jerry; and one sister, Clara Roberts. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Arrangements were by the Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
