BERTINE, LILLIAN S., 83, of Crystal River, died Thursday (April 24, 2003) at home. She was born in Red Level and was a lifelong resident of Crystal River. She was a retired teacher and began her career at the Red Level School when she was 18 years old. She was the first special education teacher in Citrus County. She was a member of the founding board of the Key Training Center. She was a graduate of the University of Florida, earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in special education.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Damron, Crystal River; two sisters, Jessie Luther and Dorothy Milner, both of Orlando; several nieces and nephews; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and caregivers, Maureen Nolan, Patricia Strickland and Rhonda Banker.
