Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, MN for Edward J. Schaefer, age 96, who died Monday at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring. Burial will be in the St. Martin Parish Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Friday and from 9:00 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the St. Martin Parish Center. The St. Martin Catholic Aid Association and St. Joseph Society will pray a rosary at 5:30 p.m. and Parish Prayers will be at 7:00 p.m. Fri. evening. Arrangements were entrusted with the Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond.
Edward was born in Zion Township, MN to Henry and Mary (Knese) Schaefer. He married Alvina Orbeck on September 8, 1936 in St. Martin Catholic Church. Edward farmed all his life on the 'homeplace'. He and Alvina moved to the town of St. Martin in 1966 and he retired in 1976 from farming. In 2008 he moved to the Assumption Court in Cold Spring. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, traveling and watching the St. Martin Martin's baseball team. He was a member of St. Martin Parish, Catholic Aid Association, St. Joseph's Society and past board member of St. Martin Co-op.
Survivors include his children, Marilyn Kaschmitter of Sauk Rapids, Elnora (Elvin) Lieser of St. Martin, Doreen Salzl-Heidgerken of Richmond, Roman (LuAnn) Schaefer of Paynesville, Dolores (John W.) Maile of Cold Spring, Irene (Duane) Burg of St. Martin, Alice (Chuck) Niewind of Grand Rapids; 26 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Alma Dirks; sister-in-law, Rose Schaefer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alvina (2000); parents; siblings, Zita, Albert, Helena, Hildegard, Alphonse; sons-in-law, Bill Kaschmitter, Wilfred Salzl, Jim Heidgerken; 1 grandson; 1 great-granddaughter; 1 great-great-grandson.
