Merina Marthaler
Merina Marthaler, age 92 of Osakis, passed away on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at the Community Memorial Home in Osakis.
Merina Elizabeth Beste was born on May 8, 1914, in West Union, to Anton and Elizabeth (Rademacher) Beste. She was united in marriage to Joseph A. Marthaler on June 23, 1937, at St. Alexius Church in West Union. They farmed for 43 years in West Union Township and then retired to a home they built in Osakis in 1980. Merina was a member of the Immaculate Conception parish, the St. Ann's Mission Group, the Christian Mothers and a rosary group at the nursing home. She was a wonderful farm wife and mother who lovingly cared for her family. Merina was a beautiful seamstress and quilter who donated lots of quilts and blankets for the missions over the years. During her years on the farm, Merina spent many hours in the kitchen, cooking, baking and canning. She always had a stash of cookies to share with any neighbors or friends who stopped in. Merina enjoyed gardening, traveling, old-time dancing and doing embroidery work. She truly lived out her Catholic faith and spent many hours visiting, helping and praying with the elderly at the nursing home. Blessed be her memory.
Merina is survived by her ten children, Hilarius "Larry" (Rita) Marthaler of Osakis, Arthur (Darlene) Marthaler of Padua, Juliana "Julie" (Donald) Schmitz of Anoka, Alcuin (Catherine) Marthaler of Osakis, Wilfred (Joyce) Marthaler of Lake Henry, Darlene (Michael) Stevens of Melrose, Arnold (Bev) Marthaler, David (Sharon) Marthaler, Marilyn (Rich) Olson, all of Osakis, Ilene (Dan) Wiener of Sauk Centre; 37 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Loyola (Ray) Frie of Osakis; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Joseph who passed over in 2000; an infant son; her great-grandson; her granddaughter's husband, Chad Wagner; two brothers, Ralph and Julian Beste; four sisters, Laura Beste, Marcella Marthaler, Mildred Roske and Hildegard Weiss. A Mass of Resurrection was held for Merina on Monday, Oct. 30, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis with Fr. Dick McGuire as celebrant. The cross bearer was Michelle Stevens-Brioschi, the servers were Brian, Ryan, Brenda and Tanya Marthaler, the readers were Judy Kulsrud and Sandy Gruber. The musicians were the From the Heart Singers and the petitions were read by Tammy Wagner and Kristie Faber. Gift bearers were Jeanne Krueger, Patti Kaiser, Tammy Weniger and Amanda Wiener.
