Joseph Buttweiler was born on April 13, 1849 in Cincinnati, OH. He came to St. Cloud, MN with his parents and as a youth, worked on the ferry boat on the Mississippi River. Later, he drove the stage from St. Cloud to Ft. Gerry, near Aberdeen, ND. His parents moved to Millwood Township, north of Freeport, MN. Joe would homestead a farm nearby when he was of age.
In 1874 Joe Buttweiler was united in marriage to Franciska Barthe in New Munich, MN. The moved from the homestead to New Munich and established a hotel there for 8 years. The Buttweilers moved to Freeport and continued in the hotel business there. Later he operated a saloon in Freeport for many years.
Mrs. Franciska (Barthe) Buttweiler died on May 12, 1908 from heart failure at her home in Freeport. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. Hermann Schoener, John Buttweiler, Mrs. Ositha (John H.) Welle, Barbara Buttweiler, Joseph H., Leo, Heinrich, Alma and Rose Buttweiler. (later in life, Alma would be known as Sr. Prima OSB and Rose would be Sr. Mary Conrad OSB). Franciska Buttweiler's sister-in-law, Agnes Barthe, is married to Peter Buttweiler - Joe's younger brother.
On May 25, 1909, Joseph Buttweiler married Anna (Schoenberg) Thull, widow of Lawrence Thull, in Melrose, MN. Joe & Anna lived in Freeport, MN, joining her 4 children with Joe's 4 children to form a new family.
After a five month illness from stomach ulcers, Joseph Buttweiler died the morning of Saturday, February 4, 1933, at his home in Freeport, MN. The funeral was at 10:00am on Monday, February 6, 1933 at Sacred Heart Church in Freeport with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. (Row L, Plot 27)
Surviving Joe Buttweiler is his wife, Anna Thull Buttweiler, children Mrs. Herman Schoener of Minneapolis, John of Avon, Mrs. Ositha (John H.) Welle of Melrose, Joseph of St. Joe, Mrs Nich Harren of St. Cloud, Leo of Spring Hill, Henry of Bismark, ND, Sr Prima OSB of St. Augusta and Sr Mary Conrad OSB of Long Prairie. He is also survived by four adult step-children: Mrs. Rudy Hoeschen of St. Cloud, Mary "Mayme" Thull of Sauk Rapids, Joseph Thull of Seattle and Mrs Nick Terhaar of St. Cloud, MN.
