Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Munich, on Monday, March 8, 2004. Visitation will be held 4 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 7 at the Patton-Shad Funeral Home, Melrose. A Franciscan Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, March 8 at Immaculate Conception Church where a rosary will be prayed by the Christian Mothers.
Alvina Mary (Poepping) Mayers, the daughter of Gerhard and Philomina Poepping, was born on August 24, 1915, in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. She died at the age of 88 on Friday, March 5, 2004, at Pine Villa in Melrose.
Alvina was united in marriage to George J. Mayers on June 11, 1935, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. They spent 45 years together on the Mayers' farm in Oak Township, milking cows, raising chickens, gardening, quilting and baking bread. In 1991, Alvina moved to New Munich, later to the Albany Assisted Living Home, the Das Goldene Wohnheim in New Munich and to Pine Haven in 1999. Alvina was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and St. Anne's Christian Mothers. Her greatest joys were being with her children and grandchildren.
Alvina is survived by her sons and daughters, Harvey, of Freeport, Arne and his wife, Diana, of North St. Paul, Hilary and his wife, Doris, of Fridley, Vi Geislinger and her husband, Larry of Watkins, Vali Flint and her husband, Ron, of Richmond, Lill Wawra and her husband, Jim, of Hamel, Leona Wieland and her husband, George, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Sr. Ange of Sells, Ariz., Fran Bolling and her husband, Dave, of New Brighton, Ernie and his wife, Jean, of Hamel, and Maurice and his wife, Char, of New Munich.; 29 grandchildren; and 41great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Tony and Melvin; and sister, Jueletta Piekarski.
Alvina was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 22, 1980; her son, Melvin; and brothers, Ted and Ves. In lieu of flowers and Mass stipends, the family requests donations to be made to Alzheimer's research or to the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls.
