Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church for Walter Rieland, 82, who died Tuesday at Melrose Area Hospital. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Walter Rieland was born in Oak Township, Stearns County, to John and Rose (Denne) Rieland. He was raised in the New Munich area. He married Lucille 'Lolly'Pogatchnik on July 10, 1943, in Camp Rucker, Ala. He was drafted by the U.S. Army during World War II and served from 1943 to 1945. He was held as a prisoner of war in Germany. After his discharge, he worked at several creameries in southern Minnesota until his retirement in 1984, when they moved to Melrose. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion, Catholic Order of Foresters, and was very involved with St. Michael's Hospice program.

Survivors include his son, Rick of Denton, Texas; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife on April 1, 1996; and brothers and sisters, Raymond, Helen, Clarence, Sylvester, Norbert, Walter, Albert, Lawrence, Elmer, and Mildred.
