Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Helen Schmitz, 87, who died Thursday at St. Cloud Hospital. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose. St. Ann's Christian Mothers will pray 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Melrose, followed by parish prayers at 7:30, and Melrose VFW Auxiliary at 8.
Helen Schmitz was born in New Munich, to John and Rose (Denne) Rieland. She married John Doetkott on June 10, 1930, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Munich. They farmed near New Munich for five years and then moved into New Munich. He died Aug. 24, 1946. She worked at Melrose Produce. She married Ted Schmitz on Jan. 2, 1951, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Munich. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Ann's Christian Mothers and a past member of Melrose VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; sons and daughters, Allen Doetkott of Arlington, Harvey Doetkott of Grey Eagle, Dennis and Roger Doetkott of Melrose, Lorraine VonWahlde of St. Cloud, and Doris Gangl of Avon; brother, Walter Rieland of Melrose; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons and daughter, John Doetkott, and Gary and Sharon Schmitz; sister and brothers, Mildred Terhaar, Bert, Lawrence, Clarence, Ray, Norb and Elmer; and two grandchildren.
