The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, St. Cloud, on Monday, March 31, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. with the Most Rev. John F. Kinney presiding. Burial will be in Annunciation Cemetery, Mayhew Lake, MN. Father Illies died on March 25, 2003 at St. Benedict's Senior Community.
Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003 and 9:00-10:45 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, St. Cloud. Vigil service will be held on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Mary. Arrangements were made by Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids.

Father Wilfred Illies was born on April 29, 1923, in Elrosa, MN. He was the son of John and Hilda (Nathe) Illies. He attended Elrosa, Belgrade, and Sauk Centre Public Schools and the Pontifical College Josephinum, Worthington, Ohio. He received his seminary training at the Pontifical College Josephinum and was ordained at the Pontifical College Josephinum by Most Rev. Amleto G. Cicognani on June 3, 1950. He celebrated his First Mass at the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, Elrosa, on Tuesday, June 13, 1950.

Father Illies served in the following assignments in the Diocese of St. Cloud: associate pastor, St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud, June 1950-June 1956; pastor of Christ Church, Newman Center, St. Cloud, August 1964-August 1969; Church of St. Marcus, Clear Lake, August 1969-July 1980; Church of the Annunc-iation, Mayhew Lake, July 1980-July 1993. Father Illies retired July 1993. He was also mayor of Clear Lake. In addition to his pastoral assignments, Father Illies was the spiritual director of Cathedral High School 1955-1958; director and chaplain of St. Cloud State Newman Club 1953-1969. He was appointed associate editor of "The Priest" in 1967. He was also a diocesan consultor from 1982-1987.

Father Illies is survived by his sisters, Marjorie and (Al) Beste of Freeport, Lois and (Phil) Williams of Bloomington; sisters in law, Viola Illies of Elrosa, Colette Illies of Spicer; step brothers and sisters, Roman and (Millie) Rieland of Sauk Centre, Margie and (Bob) Spanjers of Maple Grove, Lilah and (Jim) Simmer of New Brighton, Orville and (Bernie) Rieland of Melrose; step sister in law, Mary Ann Rieland of Fairmont, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hilda (Nathe) Illies; stepmother, Hilda (Rieland) Illies; sister, Lillian Illies; brothers, Donald and James Illies, and stepbrothers, Bert and Roman Rieland.
Memorials are preferred to Poor Clares Monastery, Christ Church Newman Center, or Parkinson's Research.
