Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2002 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Freeport, with military honors, for Edwin B. Hiltner, 80, who died at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, St. Cloud. Inurnment will follow at a later date. Friends may call Friday from 4 - 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Freeport. Golden Years Senior Citizens and Women's Catholic Order of Foresters will pray at 4 pm followed by parish prayers at 8 p.m. and Catholic Order of Foresters and Catholic Aid at 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Edwin Hiltner was born on August 14, 1922 in Freeport, Minnesota to Peter and Agatha (Hoeschen) Hiltner. He joined the US Army Air Forces on Oct. 16, 1942 and was discharged Oct 19, 1945. He married Rita Rose on May 15, 1946 in Freeport. Ed was an Oil Jobber for 30 years. He worked at Swany White Flower Mill for 2 years, Freeport Roller Mills for 18 years. He was the Village Clerk for 25 years, Secretary of Birch Lake Gun Club for 17 years, Member of 8th Air Force Historical Society, 34th Bomb Group, St. Joseph Society, Catholic Aid Association, Catholic Order of Foresters, VFW Post in Melrose and the American Legion Post in Albany. Fishing and hunting brought him great enjoyment.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Hiltner of Freeport; 4 children, Mary Ayers and Doug of Toronto, Canada, Peter Hiltner and Hyon of Korea, Sue Koopmeiners of Avon, and Leon Hiltner and Tammy of Freeport; 3 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, 1 great-grandson and 1 great-granddaughter and a very special friend, Richard Shawley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brothers, Caroline Beste, Larry and Smokey Hiltner.
