John A. (Jack) Wieber was born on July 18, 1937 in Richmond, MN. He grew up in St. Cloud and graduated from St. Cloud Cathedral High School in 1955. After high school he went to St. Cloud State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and received his teaching license in Math and Science. While in high school he signed up for the U.S. Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps, so upon graduation from college he went into active duty with the Navy as a line officer in 1961. He married Carol Brummer on Aug. 11, 1962, in Richmond, MN.
After three years of active duty service, he joined the reserves and returned to St. Cloud in 1964 where he took a teaching and coaching position at St. Cloud Cathedral High School. He became the Freshmen football coach, assistant wrestling and assistant track coach. By 1969 he had become the head wrestling coach and head track coach. In 1970 he also became the schools athletic director. In his 10 years of teaching and coaching at Cathedral, he coached on 6 Independent League State Championship Wrestling teams and 3 Track & Field Championship teams. From Cathedral he moved on to teach and coach at Pierz and finally, spent the last 20 years of his career at Rocori High School in Cold Spring where he coached several individual state champions in the shot put and discus events including Olympian Ron Backes.
Through the years while he was teaching and coaching, Jack continued his involvement in the Naval Reserves, finally retiring as a Commander after 22 years of service to his country. When not teaching and coaching, he enjoyed traveling with his family, making trips all across the state and the country. He was also a sharp card player enjoying bridge and pinochle as well as poker and Texas hold-em. An avid fisherman, he spent a lot of time on the lake and at the log cabin he built near Cold Spring. He enjoyed the outdoors whether it was biking on trails across the state with his wife Carol or enjoying the sights at many of Minnesota's state parks. The last 10 years of his life he spent doting on his grandchildren at every opportunity; attending numerous dance recitals, soccer games, grandparents days and music concerts. He taught shoe tying, fishing, and dominoes with patience and enthusiasm.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Agnes Wieber and his brother Roger Wieber.
He is survived by his wife Carol, son David Wieber (Anne) of Faribault, daughter Cherie Wolter of Madison, WI, brothers Ted Wieber (Joan) of St. Louis, MO, and Dick Wieber (Sandy) of St. Cloud, and his sister Mary Neu (Al) of Paynesville, and grandchildren Alison and Meredith Wieber and Johannes Wolter. Memorials are preferred.
