Rainer Leonard Weis
(April 23, 1920 - March 25, 2003)
Honorable Rainer L. Weis
82
Paynesville
March 25, 2003
The Honorable Rainer L. Weis of Paynesville died Tuesday. Judge Rainer Weis practiced law since 1959, when he graduated from the William Mitchell College of Law, and began working with a law firm in Willmar, Minnesota. He opened his own law firm in Paynesville, Minnesota in 1962. In 1975, Governor Wendell Anderson appointed Judge Weis to the county court for Stearns, Benton and Sherburne counties. He was re-elected in 1976 and 1982, and became the Judge of District Court pursuant to unification of the 7th District Courts in 1984. He was re-elected to this position in 1988. Judge Weis had a distaste for the traditional black robe, preferring to wear a blue robe instead. He was known as well for his interest and concern for the juveniles who appeared before him. Judge Weis served his country in WW II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Before his transfer to Europe, Judge Weis was a Link Pilot Trainer Instructor. He was selected, partially because of his fluency in the German language, as a member of the Strategic Bombing Survey. He served in both England and Germany and his interpretive skills proved useful in, among other things, the discovery of German plans for an airplane ejector seat. Judge Weis's language skills were such that he was often mistaken for a native German speaker during the war. When he returned from the war, Judge Weis attended St. John's University in Collegeville, MN. After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree from St. John's University, he obtained an additional degree in Bacteriology from the University of Minnesota. He worked several years at McKesson & Robbins Pharmaceuticals. During this same time, he also obtained his law degree.
Judge Weis and his wife Mary Adele (Clarke) Weis were married forty-seven years. They had nine children: Dr. John Weis (Dr. Holly Craveth) of Salt Lake City, UT, Dr. Ann (Thomas) Rolfs of Boston, MA, Paul Weis of San Jose, CA, Susan Weis of Chicago, IL, Mark (Michelle) Weis of Minneapolis, MN, Peter (Carol) Weis of St. Cloud, MN, infant daughter Jeanne (who died at birth), Dr. Julia Weis of Minneapolis, MN and Dr. Jeffrey Weis of Duluth, MN. Surviving Rainer is his wife Mary of Paynesville, his children, his seven grandchildren: Benjamin, Emily, Eric, Jack, Frank, Isaac, and Joseph and his sisters Catherine Coenen of Milwaukee, WI and Edith Johnson of Ada, MN. Judge Weis was born April 23, 1920 in Roscoe, MN to John and Anna (Schaefers).
His parents, brothers Werner, Carl and Herman and sisters Dula Anderson and Tharsilla Willenbring preceded him in death.
