Z. P. Wallace of Gum Creek committed suicide one evening last week. He procured morphine in Covington, made and had his Will recorded, returned home, took the fatal drug, dressed himself, and proceded to "shuffle off this mortal coil in a systematic and businesslike maner" ... He was an old bachelor and between 50 and 60 yrs. of age. (Called "Nap Wallace")

William Mitchum filed a Petition stating that he had died on July 22, 1884 leaving a Will. The Will is not in this file. William Mitchum was appointed as Executor. The estate inventory was made of Aug. 5, 1884 and it lists 140 acres on the North side of Hightower Trail in Newton County. There are many receipts in this file. Most of them signed with a mark by Margaret Bird. On Jan. 27, 1886 she signed for the receipt of land being on the North side of Hightower Trail embarcing all of the lands the said deceased North of the trail. there is a receipt dated Nov. 7, 1885 which says "received of W. W. Mitchum, Executor of the estate of Z. P. Wallis, deceased, $28 on William bird and Melissa Bird, now MelissaRichardson, this Nov. 7, 1885", signed Margaret Bird. There is a receipt signed with his mark by Cary Bird, where he received from the Executor a list of items, cows, quilts, tables, chairs, etc., and it was dated Oct. 10, 1884. There is a receipt dated Nov. 21, 1884 for full payment of a tombstone for Z. P. Wallis, deceased. Also one dated Oct. 1, 1884 for a erected for his sister in North Newton county. (31 documents)
